Thank you everyone once more for your prayers and kind wishes for Matthew. He underwent surgery on Monday to have a skin graft taken from the front of his thigh to cover his abdominal wound which was still quite open and covered only with granular tissue. This kind of tissue is not strong enough to prevent his bowel from herniating through his abdominal wall. He seemed in good spirits on Monday night, though the PCA was only just keeping his pain under control, surprisingly his thigh was the most painful.
By Thursday night he was feeling unwell, having difficulty breathing though he was being given oxygen. He was complaining about pain in his right lung and when examined by the doctor he heard Creps in his lower lung, eventually a saline and Ventolin nebuliser was ordered.
On Friday his condition had worsened, so much that his temperature had risen to over 40 degrees Celsius and the tachycardia had returned, his heart rate having risen to 166 BPM. He was put on very strong IV antibiotics and IV saline and glucose. He is being monitored very closely because of his temperature, tachycardia and he now has pneumonia.
On Saturday morning the dressing was removed from his abdomen and unfortunately the skin graft has not taken/adhered, it came off with the dressing. Thrown away, along with our hopes. What a waste of surgery, his skin graft, the pain he has had and is still enduring.
We are still waiting for answers to explain how this could happen. Yet another disaster after so many complications. Matthew was very down on Saturday night and depressed tonight and I am very concerned for his health, how he is coping and now what can be done. Where do we go from here?
I await some answers from the medical profession.
Much love, Dianne ♥

Dear Juan thank you for your thoughtful words. Under these worrying circumstances we have to take each day as it comes. It seems there are no easy answers, he is confronted with new challenges every day and these are wearing him down, both of us.

Dearest Marty thank you, your words are so kind and understanding. Yes life is very hard for Matthew and for me but we both must be strong and hopeful. He is very depressed at the moment, so disappointed that the skin graft was a failure and with all of the other complications. The plan is to transfer him back to the original hospital until he is stronger and the pneumonia has gone. Then in the next few weeks back to the current hospital for another skin graft which I am not at all convinced will work. It has been one disaster after another and I wonder why it has been this way. He was been resuscitated more than twice and not expected to survive, thankfully he is alive but the damage caused to his body was tremendous so it will take a long time for him to heal but never completely, he is still very vulnerable.
Much love dear friend.

Dear friend Yannis thank you for your kind and thoughtful words...you are very sweet to think of us.
I am not a legend just a Mother who loves and cares for my sons health and welfare.
Yes, he certainly has some inner strength to survive all he has been through.
He returned to the original hospital today which I am happy about as the care there is far superior to where he has been for the last couple of weeks. When he is stronger he will return to the second hospital to attempt another skin graft, I think this is unwise since the first graft was a complete failure.
Much love to you and your family.

Oh my dear Dianne,
My heart goes out to Michael and you.
Dear Foamy thank you for your kind words and thoughts for Matthew and myself, they are very much appreciated. Since returning to the original hospital both his condition and general emotional state have improved. The medical team have decided against the second skin graft and are concentrating more on getting the tachycardia and pneumonia under control. He has another Vacuseal dressing on his wound to help it heal.
Love and hugs lil Sweet Pea!

Thank you dear Laura for your kind words and wishes for myself and Matthew. After five months he returned home from hospital on Monday, the community nurse will be visiting to change his dressing. He is home for a break from hospital, hopefully to gain some strength as he is still very unwell.
Much love, Dianne

Dear friend Lucia thank you for thinking of me and for your kind words and prayers. I need them at present. Matthew came home from the hospital on Monday for a break and to regain some strength as he is very ill. The community nurse will be visiting to change his dressing and we have many outpatient appointments to attend. It is good to have him home but since I am his carer I am extremely busy and feeling quite exhausted from the extra responsibility I now have...but I will cope, I must.
Much love, Dianne
