Some diverse paintings from Italian expressionist painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani.

Amedeo Modigliani doesn't get a mention in the National Gallery's recently opened Rebels and Martyrs Show - but, in terms of proving a point, he could have had a whole room to himself. For the Italian-born artist was the paradigm of the romantic bohemian, the outsider painter who pursued his own vision amid a swirl of drugs, alcohol and dissolution in the Paris of the early 20th century.

He died in penury and squalor in January 1920 at the age of 35, discovered by a neighbour in the final throes of tubercular meningitis, his bed strewn with bottles of alcohol and cans of sardines, his mistress Jeanne Hébuterne nursing him. She hadn't thought to call a doctor, but her devotion to her lover was so great that, two days after his death, she threw herself backwards from a fifth-floor window. She was nine months pregnant with their second child.

What a sad story about his lover!!

I always love the more 'ample' nudes... I would have fit in back then ;)

Surprisingly ... I too ... enjoyed ... the nudes ...

They remind me of my own - lesser known - nude rendering of female subjects, where I sought to capture natural reactions to external stimuli.

These works include:

"When Do I Get Paid?"

"Geez, Somebody Actually LIVES Here?"

"Why Are All Of Your Painting Supplies Brand New?"

"Request For A Non-Alcoholic Beverage From A Sealed Container"

"Why Are You Also Nude?"

"Where Did You Put My Clothing?"

"I Would Like To Go Now"

The usual reaction to my exhibitions is for the viewer to also fling themselves backwards out of windows.

Love the nudes; not so keen on the landscapes.

Yes Diane dear, such a tragic end for his lover and unborn child, so young for him to die as well.

The Bohemian lifestyle certainly took its toll on many artists.

I love the nudes, there is something very beautful about the female form, I am so pleased that I am a female. ♡

Thanks Foamie my dear, I'm pleased that you adore the nudes, so you werent shocked?

I didnt know whether I should have put up an 'adult content' warning,
they are great arent they! ♡

Lol Puggles my sweet, I can just imagine you with your brushes, palette and easel, and you paint without clothes, well that is practical.

Dont sell yourself short my sweet, I dont think anyone would be flinging themselves out of windows, more than likely into your waiting arms. ♡

Thanks Lee dear, they are lovely, as I said before, the female form is beautiful. ♡

Yes Boney it is great art but so is your art, I would rather own one of your paintings than one of these, although I would never be able to afford any of these.

For a start I prefer your landscapes, the painting of Fall in Canada reflected in the lake, your city skyscapes of Indianapolis and though I have never seen one I'm sure a nude female painting of yours would be just as worthy as these. ♡

You should paint more as all of your paintings that I like have gone, all sold. I hope they found good homes.

The look in Jeanne's eyes.. both challenge and scares me..

Yes M dear, the look in Jeanne's eyes...they are not soft, they look very hard, from hardship maybe, due to the bohemian lifestyle she led? ♡
