STREETS OF YOUR TOWN

Streets of Your Town - The Go-Betweens

The Go-Betweens were a Brisbane, Queensland rock group who formed a band and started performing in the 1980's, this particular song was recorded in 1980 on an album called '16 Lovers Lane'. I have always enjoyed this and a few of their other songs; I like this video which was produced in April, 1996. The video shows archival footage of a typical country town in the 1980's mixed with footage from a later era. The song tells a story about the fate of many country towns in Australia where people die out, the younger people move on to find work in the cities and more and more stores and services stop and sadly the towns die too.

I might have to remove this one as there seems to be a problem with the video streaming but if you can persevere please do or watch one of the other versions here. :)

Very interesting. So often we see ghost towns in their "fully dead" phase ... but the transition and evolution to getting there is something that occurs invisibly right in front of our own eyes!

So in a manner of speaking, you have served as a go-between for the Go-Betweens; and here I am in the middle of the action.

can't quite get a bite on that.
You mean there are whole towns one can move in to?

My dearest friend Foamie , thanks, I'm so pleased that you liked the video and the song.
It does tell a story. :)
Its a shame the young people have to leave but one cant blame them, they just want to move on to better opportunities as sometimes there is just no work for them.:) ♥ xoxox

Yes Robert dear, it is a shame that small towns end up as 'ghost towns' and it can happen in no time at all.
Some of these smaller towns are supported from the business generated from local farmers and some kind of local manufacturing. Sadly a lot of primary producers here have gone bankrupt from the ongoing drought and have had to pack up and leave a family business which has survived for generations, that would he heartbreaking.
Also some of the manufacturing plants have closed and gone off shore so there is no work for the local people and therefore they have to look elsewhere for a livelihood.
Some of these towns who have a need for trades and services which have been left vacant have taken the initiative of advertising for new residents by promoting the benefits of country living, a slower pace of life and with the cost of housing spiraling out of control in the cities and outer suburbs they are offering housing at a more affordable price.
These people are ensuring the life of their town by giving it a new future; I think its a great idea as it will work for some. ♥ :) xoxo

M my dear, there are places on the fringes of the city that are really nice, I would move to some place like that, then you have the best of both worlds, preferably right on the ocean.
I am fortunate where I live I have a river which is 10 minutes away and I have the beach and ocean which is a 20minute drive from here, very nice. :) ♥ xoxox
