Flora

I am the handmaid of the earth,
I ‘broider fair her glorious gown,
And deck her on her days of mirth
With many a garland of renown.

And while Earth's little ones are fain
And play about the Mother's hem
I scatter every gift I gain
From sun and wind to gladden them.

'Flora' from 'Poems By The Way' – William Morris 1834 -1896

The image is an exquisite pastoral fresco of 'Flora', Roman goddess of Spring (Primavera), flowers, fertility and abundance, filling her basket with freshly picked blooms.

Stabiae, a popular resort town of the Roman era. The fresco was found in the excavations of the Villa Arianna and it is now at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. Stabiae was destroyed at the same time as Pompeii, in an eruption by Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

I have liked this Flora,
a marvel of poem, of sensibility, graces for dawning this rainy Saturday,

Thank you dearest Elia for your kind and thoughtful words.

Since my mind is preoccupied with other problems and I could not find the inspiration to write a poem myself I decided to post this lovely poem by William Morris.
I am so pleased that you enjoyed it and the image of Flora.
Thank you also for the link to part of the soundtrack of the film 'Chocolat', a favourite of mine.

Hugs and kisses my friend and wishes for a good week. ^^

Thank you dear Foamy for your kind words, yes it is a lovely poem to herald the arrival of Spring.
I must say that Spring has not arrived in her usual gracious and gentle way, the temperatures here have been terribly hot, most days above 30°C, more like Summer.
Take care my friend, I hope you are feeling better.

Thank you dear Marty for your kind words, yes, a beautiful poem and image.
Pompeii still holds much mystery and fascination, a terrible disaster and loss of life.
I wish you a lovely week too dear Marty!

Thank you dear Antonio for your thoughtful words, yes, Spring a time of renewal and new life.
Once again Flora dresses the trees with new leaves and the gardens and fields with new flowers.

It is unseasonably hot here, nothing like our cool and gentle entrance into Spring, much more like mid-Summer temperatures.
hugs my friend
