Lord Byron - An Unpublished Poem

"Oh Memory, torture me no more,

The present's all o'ercast;
My hopes of future bliss are o'er,
In mercy veil the past.
Why bring those images to view
I henceforth must resign ?
Ah ! why those happy hours renew,
That never can be mine?
Past pleasure doubles present pain,
To sorrow adds regret,
Regret and hope are both in vain,
I ask but to — forget."

Lord Byron  - English Poet -  1788-1824

"Byron's famous love poetry gives us a glimpse of the tremendous passions that moved him.
Lord Byron's hedonistic lifestyle and much recorded cavalier and scandalous treatment of his many women certainly does not lend credence to any reputation he might have as a caring and sensitive soul, but maybe the above example of his famous love poetry can be seen as proof of some redeeming evidence.

His first true love at the age of 16, was Mary Chaworth who two years older, was derisive about his devotion to her. Byron, already aware of the doomed outcome of this unrequited love, wrote with a pencil in a volume of Madame de Maintenon's letters, belonging to her, the following verses, which was never published:

Years later, after contracting an unhappy marriage, she sought vainly to rekindle his interest, at a time his fame as a great poet was burgeoning. As is often the case in such matters, it was far too late."
From Love Poetry of the World.
I also recommend that you read Byron's epic and reflective poem "The Dream"

Nie miał Byron szczęścia w życiu niestety. Piękne płatki róży na zdjeciu. Pozdrawiam.
Byron had no luck in life, unfortunately. Beautiful rose petals in the picture. Yours.

WDear Friend that's is a wonderful poem full of intensity and love.
sometimes I think previously loved and felt in a more profound, life was serene, quiet and had time to love, but not corresponded, for other reasons that marked society.
There are so many beautiful writings to read in those cool evenings by the fireplace and make me dream ...

thanks

a hug

Thank you for stopping by dear NYD , I hope you enjoyed your rainy afternoon. Lord Byron has written many wonderful poems, far too numerous to mention, the more I search, the more I find.
His epic poem "The Dream" is much more reflective than "The Dream" written by John Donne. I have posted a few of Byron's poems on my blog, some I love are "There Is Pleasure In The Pathless Woods", "She Walks In Beauty Like The Night", "When We Two Parted" and "To Mary" from a volume of poems he called "Fugitive Pieces".

o sofrimento, a luta, a perda;

Thank you dearest Foamy for dropping by.
Apparently after her marriage to another man and many years later Mary did regret her decision to reject her most affectionate and ardent admirer Lord Byron. Later after she left her husband her attempts to contact him by writing and renew her acquaintance with Byron were ignored. It is more complicated than this so I have put a link here to a document which you might find interesting.
