An Echo From Willowwood.

"O ye, all ye that walk in Willowwood." (D.G. Rossetti)

Two gazed into a pool, he gazed and she,
Not hand in hand, yet heart in heart, I think,
Pale and reluctant on the water's brink,
As on the brink of parting which must be.
Each eyed the other's aspect, she and he,
Each felt one hungering heart leap up and sink,
Each tasted bitterness which both must drink,
There on the brink of life's dividing sea.
Lilies upon the surface, deep below
Two wistful faces craving each for each,
Resolute and reluctant without speech: —
A sudden ripple made the faces flow
One moment joined, to vanish out of reach:
So those hearts joined, and ah! were parted so.

A Sonnet by Christina Rossetti
Water Lilies - Claude Monet - 1904

A special thank you to my friend Alexandre for making me aware of this beautiful sonnet.

The Human Resources Department here at work, frowns on eying anyone's aspect. In my opinion this kills the romance.

Hello Dianne,
Impressionist painting and modern poem!
Both have the quality to touch the soul. Both leave room for interpretation and for our own excitement!

Thank you dear Antonio for your thoughtful comment, yes an impressionist painting, I hoped it would convey the feelings of this poem, which is not so modern, it was written by Christina Rossetti in the 1800's, Victorian England.

Thanks dear /t. , yes I am familiar with that painting, the couple look absolutely miserable
...not quite what I was hoping for. :)
I was searching for an image which would complement the feelings of the poem ... a pond, with two loving but sad faces reflected in the water and some willows and lilies. Sadly that was too much to hope for, so the lovely Monet painting had to suffice.
But thank you for the suggestion my friend! :)

Thank you dear Foamy , yes it is a lovely poem by Christina Rossetti, thank you for your kind praise of my poems.
You are most likely familiar with her poems and yes I posted a poem of hers, another favourite of mine "I Wish I Could Remember That First Day", in April, 2010 "In the footsteps of Christina Rossetti" where I wrote my own account of her poem from my perspective. It fades in comparison to her words but at the time it was written with sincerity and affection.
