The leaves of the bush rustled
I heard the feet of a girl
Crackle underfoot the past
Under Australian skies
The leaves of the bush rustled
I heard the feet of a boy
Tread backwards around a mast
He shows no flagging spirit
As he walks with purpose
Mile after mile in a line
Of meandering zigzags
Hoping to remember the route
He had passed so many years ago
When birds would rest in his hand
On their long journey south
Under Australian skies
You could say they knew each other
When one hand touched the bark
Where another had touched before
Her spirit returned as quickly
As it left his, her life returned
Touching, touching her soul
The air in her lungs, her all.
