Mirrors and Light - Some words for my Friend

So many years have passed

Since our paths first crossed

I have never asked you

Or expected you to love me

At one time I had hoped

But I knew that could never be

I did however wish

You would always be my friend

You once said when I had angered you

“We are not engaged”

Well no we weren’t

I don’t need to be engaged to anyone

I am not seeking a fiancé or a husband

I did not want to change you

Or change your life

I admired you for whom you were

Your good qualities, your integrity

Your kindness and humanity

You say I must have faith in you

Well yes I do

Though, when you leave

The shadows of doubt move in

And I reach out to you with

Heartfelt words and there is no reply

And wonder if this time you won't return

How many years it has been now

And I have been here for you

Always … waiting

It is comforting to see you

Watching me from a distance

Sad that you don’t always venture closer

And leave some words for me

I miss your conversation and poems

Perhaps now you have nothing to say to me?

I wish I could catch the light in a mirror

And shine it in your direction

To attract your attention

When you are there at the edge of my world

Perhaps then I could speak to you

And tell you

I do not want to change your world

My world is brighter when you are near

I would just like you to be my friend ...
