Love After Love


The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other's welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.

You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.

Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

    Thank you for your kind words dear Lucia . I wasn't aware of this poet until recently, only when I read this poem and thought it was lovely. I am not familiar with the painter either, I thought this painting with the mirror reflection was a good choice to complement the poem.

    Hello my sweet friend COL it is so lovely to see you here once more, I hope that you are well and enjoying your life?
    I am not blogging as much myself,I don't feel as committed to my blog as I once did, my poems don't come as freely as they did before. One can only write so much about loneliness and heartbreak before people tire of it and lose interest.
    This is a beautiful poem by Derek Walcott, I have only found him recently.
    A poem about healing, finding one's self after heartbreak and learning to move on with life.

    I found it difficult to find an image that would complement the words, I was quite content with this painting as the lady looks happier in her mirror reflection.
