With
lingering love she gazed at the dispersed
Colors of dusk. It pleased her utterly
to lose herself in the complex melody
or in the curious life to be found in verse.
lt was not the primal red but rather grays
that spun the fine thread of her destiny,
for the nicest distinctions and all spent
in waverings, ambiguities, delays.
Lacking the nerve to tread this treacherous
Labyrinth, she looked in on, whom without,
the shapes, the turbulence, the striving rout,
(Like the other lady of the looking glass.)
The gods that dwell too far away for prayer
abandoned her to the final tiger, Fire.
Colors of dusk. It pleased her utterly
to lose herself in the complex melody
or in the curious life to be found in verse.
lt was not the primal red but rather grays
that spun the fine thread of her destiny,
for the nicest distinctions and all spent
in waverings, ambiguities, delays.
Lacking the nerve to tread this treacherous
Labyrinth, she looked in on, whom without,
the shapes, the turbulence, the striving rout,
(Like the other lady of the looking glass.)
The gods that dwell too far away for prayer
abandoned her to the final tiger, Fire.

Fascinating and complex. Thought provoking.
ReplyDeleteI love Borges. This is a very thought provoking poem about the Uruguayan poet Susana Soca. I knew nothing of her. I had to google her.
ReplyDeleteThank you dear Leovi , yes, I think it is an interesting and exquisite poem, it held some resonance for me.

Thank you dear Foamy , yes it is a thought provoking poem.
ReplyDeleteI could identify with this poem, its message resonated within me. I like to lose myself in the complex melody of verse, not that I am a great poet like Borges...he writes this so thoughtfully. To me the Labyrinth represents life and I tend to waver and trepidate when it comes to taking those steps and moving forward. The turbulence and striving rout is the problems we encounter in life and so in the life of Susana Soca and her untimely end in a plane crash.
There is another translation of this poem, also beautiful but I chose this version.
"With slow love she looked at the scattered
Colors of afternoon. It pleased her
To lose herself in intricate melody
Or in the curious life of verses.
Not elemental red but the grays
Spun her delicate destiny,
Fashioned to discriminate and exercised
In vacillation and in blended tints.
Without venturing to tread this perplexing
Labyrinth, she watched from without
The shapes of things, their tumult and their course,
Just like that other lady of the mirror.
Gods who dwell far-off past prayer
Abandoned her to that tiger, Fire."
Some intersting information in a manuscript here regarding the poem.

Colours of dusk could be the same you see at dawn, What matters is the feeling You have in dawn or dusk...
ReplyDeleteThank you dear M , yes the colours at dawn and dusk can be just as beautiful, the feelings that they evoke are what is important.
