Emile Verhaeren Love Poem

The still beauty of summer evenings on the
greenswards where they lie outspread holds
out to us, without empty gesture or words,
a symbol of rest in gladness.

Young morning and its tricks has gone
away with the breezes; noon itself and the
velvet skirts of its warm winds, of its heavy
winds, no longer sweeps the torrid plain;and
this is the hour when, without a branch's
moving or a pond's ruffling its waters, the
evening slowly comes from the tops of the
mountains and takes its seat in the garden.

Oh the infinite golden flatness of the waters,
and the trees and their shadows on the reeds,
and the calm and sumptuous silence in whose
still presence we so greatly delight that we
desire to live with it always or to die of it and
revive by it, like two imperishable hearts
tirelessly drunken with its brightness.

Emile Verhaeren - Belgian Poet - 1855-1916

  8. I would love to be able to read certain poets in their original language. I'm sure some of the sentiment flows so much better. This is a nice love poem to nature though.

  17. Yes dearest Foamy , it would be lovely to read certain poems in their orginal language. I am sure that some of the subtle nuances are lost in the translation; though I think this one has translated without losing much sentiment from its original French.
    Thanks for your comment. :)

  21. Thank you Jasmin dear friend, yes there is such an open honesty to the grasses of the field and meadows and that special feeling in the air in Summer just before dusk, when the shadows lengthen as the golden sunlight sends long shadows from the trees.

  56. Hello dear col ,thank you, I am so pleased that you enjoyed this poem by Emile Verhaeren, he is a wonderful writer of romantic and visual poetry. The name is confusing, I too thought that Emile was a female until I did some more research, the poem does have a 'feminine' feel to it.
I still have some more surprises in store and when I am feeling well again I shall post some more poems, at present I am saving my strength.
I am always happy when you can find the time to visit. Every time I think of you I am still lost in the beauty of fragrant dawns and dusks of softest mauves and lilac hues...that is the image I have painted in my imagination from your poetic words.
Lots of warm hugs and kisses coming your way.
