Amid Obscure Shadows

When amid obscure shadows
a lost voice murmurs
disturbing its sad calm ...
If in my soul's depths
I hear it sweetly sounding,

tell me, Is it the wind moans
in its convolutions or that
in passing your sighs speak of love?

When the red sun shines
in my window at morning
and my love evokes your shadow,
if I think I feel the press
of another mouth on mine,

tell me, Is it that blind I rave
or that your heart sends me
a kiss in a sigh?

If in the luminous day
and in the deep gloomy night;
if in all that surrounds
my soul that desires you,
I think I can feel and see you,

tell me, Do I feel and think in a dream
or is it that in a sigh
you give me your breath to drink?

Poem: Amid Obscure Shadows (Rima XXVIII)

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, (February 17, 1836- December 22, 1870) was a Spanish post-romanticist writer of poetry and short stories, now considered one of the most important figures in Spanish literature.

  5. liebe Dianne,
ich folge deinen Gedanken, die ich etwas kenne, und finde das Gedicht sehr schön passend,
ich lasse blaue Veilchen da, denn blaue Veilchen sind mit dem natürlichen Duft nachhaltig, dezent und fein……

  9. Thank you Foamy dear, I'm so pleased that you liked the poem. Bécquer does not seem to be as well known here as some of the English poets and Neruda or Rilke, for there are so many, but his poems are beautiful.
I think this poem does resemble the style of Rilke.
The Spanish are very romantic; if you look up there at my followers, the man in the black and white photo with the moustache is
Ricardo Miñana, he writes the most amazing poems. I don't know if he has been published but he should be ... well worth a visit. :)

  10. Dianne,
i never heard of G.A.Bécquer until Enrique, a new blogging friend quoted him,

i did look in to check on some of his works....and found 'Legends, tales and poems' on Amazon.

i'v'ent ordered it yet as i still have much reading to finish.
And i'm so glad to find one of his poems here in the very rich spaces of 'Here is my heart'!

    Thanks a lot Dianne!

I'm so pleased that you have enjoyed this poem and that you found it here, I think it is beautiful.
I don't have any of his books, I found him on the Net quite by accident a little while back.
Then Leovi another Spanish blogging friend mentioned him when I posted the last poem 'Love' by Pablo Neruda. Yes I slao follow Enrique's blog, beautiful photos and sentiments.
You French and Spanish fellows are all romantics. :)
Thank you for your lovely comments, many hugs to you too!

Here is another little gem for you.

The viewless atoms of the air
    Around me palpitate and burn,
All heaven dissolves in gold, and earth
    Quivers with new-found joy.
Floating on waves of harmony I hear
    A stir of kisses, and a sweep of wings;
    Mine eyelids close--"What pageant nears?"
    "'Tis Love that passes by!"
